I originally bought this one previous owner car in 1977 from a garage in Hertford,Hert s., after driving past a few times and seeing it on the forecourt. I loved the body shape and still do. Purple was also my favourite colour! Wishing to move on from owning a Lambretta and then a couple of Minis, this was the car for me.
After driving it a few times on several longer journeys, I experienced some issues with an engine oil leak, so I decided to swap out the engine for a Gold Seal replacement in early 1978?
In November 1979 I needed to sell the car for a deposit on a house, as I was getting married in 1980. As I had access to a company car at that time, my MGB was unessential. A familiar story to many I expect.
Heartbroken to part with the car. I sold it to the sister of a good friend who was looking for a replacement MGB for her old MGB roadster at that time.
Shortly after selling her the car, I was missing my MGB so decided to write her a letter. I wrote to say I was interested should she ever want to sell so please could she give me first refusal. “It’s not for sale” was the reply.
Quite a few more years went by, and although I had no more contact with her, I remained in touch with her brother who knew she still had the car. Apparently, ‘Violet’ was her pride and joy, and she was very protective of it with no intention of selling.
Forty-four years after selling her the car, I learned from my friend that his sister had sadly passed away. Although not appropriate at that time to ask about the car, I did wonder after so many years if she had kept it?
One day in September 2023 completely out of the blue, I took a phone call from the lady’s husband. He had been going through her things after she had passed away and had discovered the letter I had written at least 40 years earlier! After finding and reading my old letter, he contacted me to give me first refusal I had asked for all those years ago. He had got my mobile number from his late wife’s brother, my old friend. Her husband told me she had kept the car, but he had no interest in it, and was keen to sell and hoped I was still interested! I learned that during the last 12 years of her life the car had been garaged and not driven. She had treasured the car for all those years and although she had suffered rapidly declining health, her husband had been given strict instructions not to sell ‘Violet’ while she was alive. I was very interested!
During her many years of ownership, the car had been well looked after, maintained, enjoyed, and loved. Many aspects of the car had remained unchanged including my old Gold Seal engine replacement! Apparently ‘Violet’ had her own bank account which was credited when some spare cash was available. This enabled essential mechanical repairs and improvements but only when there was enough was in ‘Violets’ account. There was a good deal of paperwork and invoices of work carried out, and programmes to show the car had been entered into few car shows, and rallies too.
January 2012 After having extensive mechanical refurbishment by MGOC.
In discussion with my wife, by this time we had been married 43 years, I arranged to view the car in Ware, Herts. Although it had not run for a long time, it had been kept in a dry garage so meant the bodywork and sub-frame were in great condition for a 50-year-old car. The usual areas and spots that are prone to rust and rot on a MGB were surprisingly sound, and as the asking price was low enough, we agreed to buy the car back in October 2023!
November 2023
I hoped to be able to drive the car the 25 miles home but due to some serious carburettor fuel leaks, seized front brakes and flat tyres, it had to be trailered to my garage at home.
November 2023
After several attempts to get it running, compression test showed that my old Gold Seal engine would be best replaced after 44 years, 75,000 miles, and being inactive for so long.
The past 18 months have resulted in the following work so far with extensive engineering help from my son in law:
Installation of a Fast Road engine from Mech Spec with a Peter Burgess head.
Gearbox overhaul by First Motion.
New HIF Carburettors built and set up by A.C. Dodd.
Refurbishment of original Petrol Tank by Commercial Specialists in Luton.
Fit new Master Cylinders.
Fit Electronic Ignition from Power Spark.
New Autumn Leaf carpet set bought ready for fitting from MGB Hive.
Sourced improved driver and passenger seats in Autumn Leaf on Ebay.
Bought superior quality Stainless Steel Bumper set from MGOC
Many other minor new or recon parts, brakes, nuts, bolts, hoses, pipes etc, mostly from MGOC & Rimmer Bros.
There are still many other things to fettle, find, fit and finish, before eventually finding a suitable someone to carry out a full respray without taking out a second mortgage or robbing a bank!!
April 2025
Hoping to be back on the road by Autumn 2025.
